30% Unemployment, Pre-Recession: Immigrant Communities Need Real Recovery

VIA RaceWire:

Last week, the world’s central bankers got together for a little strategy session in Colorado, and declared that the recovery is on its way. This is the way it works with recessions. They ravage the world, leave millions hungry and homeless, and are eventually said to be ‘over.’

For communities of color, ‘recovery’ can be a vapid term. People of color consistently face rates of unemployment higher than what whites experience in the worst recessions. Meanwhile, people of color in the labor market are pulling in wages of 60 cents for every dollar that white people earn. If this is what recovery is going to look like, we’ve got a problem.

In this video, community organizer Shaw San Liu of San Francisco’s Chinese Progressive Association explains what the inequitable economy means for her community — before, during, and after the officially recognized recovery.

Can YOU Balance Oakland's Budget?

A pretty clever site by our beloved city. It takes you through a survey, letting you decide how the budget should be balanced. It was informative for me, I learned more of the ins & outs of where they make cuts in city spending and how many people vote for each option!

44% voted to cut youth program funds! Whaat? no more bandaid solutions folks..we need deeper, effective investments for the Town - like in its young people!

PROTEST ON CHEVRON : DR. HENRY CLARK ADDRESSES THE MARCH

Yesterday, the Bay Area marched through the streets of Richmond and sent a clear message to Chevron: stop polluting our communities, put your workers back to work on cleaner technology, and stop putting profits over people's lives!

Open letter to Chevron: A solution for environmental health, justice and jobs

Dear Mr. Coyle,
You state that Chevron’s Richmond refinery project should go forward now, it will protect our environmental health, there would be “no heavier crude oil processed” and Chevron “would continue to make gasoline for the Bay Area from the medium and light crude oils we now process.” (7/22/09 S.F. Chronicle.) We urge Chevron to make a public commitment to do what you say and not refine heavier, dirtier oil at this refinery.
Such a commitment would include:

• Enforceable limits to assure the oil refined will not be heavier (lbs/barrel) or dirtier (arsenic, mercury, nickel, nitrogen, selenium, sulfur or vanadium content). Each oil quality limit would allow the highest 365-day average of recent years as a running annual average in order to allow the refinery day-to-day operating flexibility.
• Monitoring to implement this assurance. Levels of these constituents can vary in the daily blends of oils Chevron introduces to processing at two different places in the refinery. Each limited constituent would be measured daily in each of these oil streams at the point where it is first introduced to processing after blending.
• Transparency to verify this assurance publicly. Oil quality monitoring results would be certified and reported publicly each month.

As the Superior Court found, the environmental impact report for your project did not adequately address the type of oil to be refined. As independent experts have shown, your project would enable the processing of heavier and more contaminated oil, which could increase many types of pollution significantly. It is not reasonable to ask people who live near the refinery and already face a legacy of toxic racism, disparate health risk, and pollution-related blight to accept this added risk.

The commitment we seek would not require Chevron to change the project as currently designed. It would not require the refinery to do anything different from what it is doing now. It would assure that all the impacts from refining “dirtier” oil will be prevented, so our health will be protected, and everyone can get back to work right now.

Shuttle and Meteor

See Explanation. Clicking on the picture will download the highest resolution version available.
This early morning skyscape was captured last week on August 4th, looking northeast across calm waters in the Turn Basin at NASA's Kennedy Space Center. In a striking contrast in motion, the space shuttle Discovery, mounted on a massive transporter, creeps toward launch pad 39A at less than two miles per hour, while a brilliant meteor streaks through the sky traveling many miles per second. Of course, this week skywatchers have seen many similar meteor streaks during the annual Perseid meteor shower. But the meteor flashing above Discovery is not likely to be one of the Perseids because its path doesn't point back to that shower's radiant. Seen here near picture center, brilliant planet Venus still dominates the sky as the Morning Star, though. Yellowish tinted Mars lies near the top of the frame and Orion's red giant star Betelgeuse is toward the right.
