Louder than bombs: LRAD 'sonic cannon' debuts in U.S. at G20 protests
An ATC sales representative confirms to DailyFinance that Pittsburgh police used ATC's Long Range Acoustic Device (LRAD). "Yes, we sold one LRAD unit to a government agency -- I don't know which one -- which was used in Pittsburgh," the representative said.
ATC's website calls the company "a leading innovator of commercial, government, and military directed acoustics product offers" that offers "sound solutions for the commercial, government, and military markets." The New York Times Friday reported that Pittsburgh officials believed this to be the technology's first use against civilians.
The paper did not identify the manufacturer of the audio cannon. "The police fired a sound cannon that emitted shrill beeps, causing demonstrators to cover their ears and back up," the paper reported. Similar "non-lethal" products designed by ATC have been used at sea by cruise ships to ward off pirates.
The company's LRAD series has a variety of featured benefits, including "Longer stand-off distances for increased asset protection, larger coverage with fewer personnel, and determination of intent of groups or individuals from extended distances." The product line can also transmit "bird distress calls to repel targeted birds from crops, buildings, and airports."
"The military version is a 45-pound, dish-shaped device that can direct a high-pitched, piercing tone with a tight beam. Neither the LRAD's operators or others in the immediate area are affected," USA Today reported in 2005.
ATC was founded in 1980 and recapitalized in 1992, according to its website, which explains that it began engineering sound weaponry in 1996. "In response to the October 2000 attack on the USS Cole, we developed and introduced our revolutionary Long Range Acoustic Device (LRAD) product and continue to expand our sound reproduction technologies and products to meet the needs of our customers and target markets."
Given yesterday's civilian debut, with no reported casualties, commercial and civilian uses for LRAD also seem possible. And ATC, while small, is finding a rosy financial picture. The company reported record fiscal third quarter revenues of $4.4 million, for the quarter ended June 30: a 60 percent revenue increase over the prior year.
In a press release from early August, ATC president and CEO Tom Brown remarked: "We generated our second consecutive profitable quarter and achieved year-over-year revenue growth through strong LRAD sales to U.S. and foreign naval forces, maritime shipping companies and for bird-deterrence applications. ... With pirate attacks up 110% in the first six months of this calendar year with 240 incidents reported, compared to 114 incidents for the same period last year, we continue to experience increasing domestic and international maritime security interest and orders for our proprietary LRAD systems."

Armadillo Powers Toward $1 Million Prize
A rocket powered vehicle successfully completed the first step toward qualifying to win a $1 million prize for NASA's Northrop Grumman Lunar Lander Challenge. Armadillo Aerospace's "Scorpius" lander set world records for vertical landings and takeoff flights by flying up 50 meters (164 feet) into the air, maneuvering over to land on a simulated rocky lunar surface 50 meters (164 feet) away, and then rising and flying back to land where it started. The flight included a requirement of at least 180 seconds of flying time. Watch the video from the second qualifying flight here. Armadillo is the first team of three teams looking to nab the prize this year.

Bel Air Collection.
On September 11th BREEZY will be dropping the Bel Air Collection. This collection is inspired by the 90's sitcom The Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air. Without directly placing reference to the show, we dissected our pieces by using hints of the show while keeping it nostalgic. This also is our first time in for womens. Without further ado, here is a preview of the Bel Air Collection.

UNFCCC
In December 2009, delegates from around the world will meet in Copenhagen, Denmark for the 15th Conference of the Parties (COP 15) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). Presidents, prime ministers, ministers and leaders from North America, South America, Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia and Island nations will sit together during this conference. This conference at Copenhagen is to provide a critical opportunity for the world’s nations to reach a comprehensive agreement on climate change and act on it.
Many general people like you and me around the world have been contributing to what they would want to discuss and resolve at the Copenhagen conference because they realized that it is important to have a concrete agreement or responsibility to tackle climate change .
Coming to the fact, climate change will be one of the most catastrophic circumstances that man will ever experience. Climate change could have disastrous effects on the society directly (water, food, health, habitat, economic structure such as energy, transport and industry) and also through the environment (rainfall, sea level rise, extreme weather conditions such as hurricanes and typhoons, floods and droughts). It actually threatens the survival of human beings. Most vulnerable groups are those living in poorer countries and land like ours.
1. How much are the industrialized countries willing to reduce their emissions of greenhouse gases?
2. How much are major developing countries such as China and India willing to do, to limit the growth of their emissions?
3. How is the help needed by developing countries to engage in reducing their emissions and adapting to the impacts of climate change going to be financed?
4. How is that help in terms of money or technology going to be managed?
What role do you see for yourself to contribute to the above? As the impact of climate change starts to proliferate, it is pertinent to concentrate on the local scenario. But we have to remind ourselves that climate change could be subdued only if the entire world acts together. Let’s broaden our thoughts, knowledge, sphere of influence and action on climate change.
Drax climate change protesters sentenced
Climate protesters who hijacked a coal train on its way to Drax power station in June 2008 are expected to be sentenced today at 4.30pm. The 22 men and women, including a senior university lecturer, teachers and film-makers, were convicted in July of obstructing an engine or carriage using a railway. The judge has already ruled out prison and they are likely to receive heavy community service sentences.
Their hopes of repeating the "Kingsnorth Six" judgment last September, when activists who defaced a power station chimney were acquitted by a Kent jury, were dashed by a judge in July, who refused to admit arguments that the hijack was "necessary and proportionate to prevent the greater crime of carbon pollution".
At the end of the July trial, chief crown prosecutor North Yorkshire, Rob Turnbull, said: "This was not a peaceful demonstration about the environment, but a well planned and executed crime where two defendants impersonated railway employees and went onto the trackside to stop a train lawfully delivering coal to the power station."
