Future space exploration Mars and beyond!!
we have come a long way!!
from sticks and stones to
Bots & clones.
At the core of NASA's future space exploration is a return to the moon, where we will build a sustainable long term human presence.
As the space shuttle approaches retirement and the International Space Station nears completion, NASA is building the next fleet of vehicles to bring astronauts back to the moon, and possibly to Mars and beyond.

21ST CENTURY TOUCHSCREEN FOR MUSICIANS
Artists have long been pioneers whose initially kooky-seeming notions later become mainstream; without them we'd probably not have loft living, for instance.
Now a handful of musicians are pioneering the adoption of touchscreen interfaces to execute something more complicated than ATM transactions: Light shows coordinated with music mixes. As digital piracy cuts into CD sales, live concerts have increased in importance for big-ticket musicians. And in an era of overstimulation, a stage and a mic just don't cut it anymore.
Enter the JazzMutant Lemur, a Star-Trek-like device that looks as if it was designed at MIT's Media Lab. The multitouch device controls sequencers, synthesizers, virtual instruments, and lights, giving musicians an absurd amount of control in the form of a little rectangle.

Takashi Murakami | Gagosian Exhibition Preview
Takashi Murakami
Coming off an impressive showing at Germany’s Museum für Moderne Kunst, Takashi Murakami prepares for a pit stop at the Gagosian Gallery in the UK before the final showing of his retrospective tour at the renown Guggenheim Museum Bilbao in Spain. While the Gagosian show will run concurrent to the Guggenheim exhibition, it will open a week earlier on February 10th, 2009. For the meantime, we get a preview of a piece from the upcoming show featuring Takashi’s “Time Bokan” with an original camouflage backing, much like the wallpaper featured at last years Brooklyn showing.

After limiting their product primarily to the overseas market and select locations within the US, Bape looks to open their online store very soon. Offering up their limited edition goods and hard-to-find garments, the Japanese streetwear brand opens up their availability extensively. NASA Tests First Deep-Space Internet
WOW THIS IS IT !!!
PASADENA, Calif. -- NASA has successfully tested the first deep space communications network modeled on the Internet.
Working as part of a NASA-wide team, engineers from NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif., used software called Disruption-Tolerant Networking, or DTN, to transmit dozens of space images to and from a NASA science spacecraft located about more than 32 million kilometers (20 million miles) from Earth.
"This is the first step in creating a totally new space communications capability, an interplanetary Internet," said Adrian Hooke, team lead and manager of space-networking architecture, technology and standards at NASA Headquarters in Washington.
NASA and Vint Cerf, a vice president at Google, Inc., in Mountain View, Calif., partnered 10 years ago to develop this software protocol. The DTN sends information using a method that differs from the normal Internet's Transmission-Control Protocol/Internet Protocol, or TCP/IP communication suite, which Cerf co-designed.
The Interplanetary Internet must be robust enough to withstand delays, disruptions and disconnections in space. Glitches can happen when a spacecraft moves behind a planet, or when solar storms and long communication delays occur. The delay in sending or receiving data from Mars takes between three-and-a-half to 20 minutes at the speed of light.
Unlike TCP/IP on Earth, the DTN does not assume a continuous end-to-end connection. In its design, if a destination path can't be found, the data packets are not discarded. Instead, each network node keeps custody of the information as long as necessary until it can safely communicate with another node. This store-and-forward method, similar to basketball players safely passing the ball to the player nearest the basket, means that information does not get lost when no immediate path to the destination exists. Eventually, the information is delivered to the end user.
"In space today, an operations team has to manually schedule each link and generate all the commands to specify which data to send, when to send it, and where to send it," said Leigh Torgerson, manager of the DTN Experiment Operations Center at JPL. "With standardized DTN, this can all be done automatically."
Engineers began a month-long series of DTN demonstrations in October. Data were transmitted using NASA's Deep Space Network in demonstrations occurring twice a week. Engineers use NASA's Epoxi spacecraft as a Mars data-relay orbiter. Epoxi is on a mission to encounter Comet Hartley 2 in two years.
"There are 10 nodes on this early interplanetary network," said Scott Burleigh of JPL, lead software-engineer for the demonstrations. "One is the Epoxi spacecraft itself and the other nine, which are on the ground at JPL, simulate Mars landers, orbiters and ground mission-operations centers."
This month-long experiment is the first in a series of planned demonstrations to qualify the technology for use on a variety of upcoming space missions, said Jay Wyatt, manager of the Space Networking and Mission Automation Program Office at JPL. In the next round of testing, a NASA-wide demonstration using new DTN software loaded on board the International Space Station is scheduled to begin next summer.
In the next few years, the Interplanetary Internet could enable many new types of space missions. Complex missions involving multiple landed, mobile and orbiting spacecraft will be far easier to support through the use of the Interplanetary Internet. It could also ensure reliable communications for astronauts on the surface of the moon.
The Deep Impact Networking Experiment is sponsored by the Space Communications and Navigation Office in NASA's Space Operations Mission Directorate in Washington. NASA's Science Mission Directorate and Discovery Program in Washington provided experimental access to the Epoxi spacecraft. The Epoxi mission team provided critical support throughout development and operations.
My SPOON'S too big! Seen this on youtube? It's HEElarious, so much so that I googled it. This awesome short is Don Hertzfeldt's first self-made flick out of college. And, born in Fremont, dude is a Bay Area born himself.
The short "Rejected" was actually nominated for an Oscar, and is now a youtube classic, which pretty much means you're a G.
From his obviously self-written Wikipedia:
"Hertzfeldt is an artist with anti-corporate leanings and in appearances has often told the humorous story of how he was tempted to produce the worst possible cartoons he could come up with for the companies, make off with their money, and see if they would actually make it to air. Eventually this became the germ for Rejected's theme of a collection of cartoons so bad they were rejected by advertising agencies, leading to their creator's breakdown."

...green fashion done not-so-cheesy. check these fly-ass recycled plastic boots from a Chilean industrial design student, Camila Labra...
only $45 a pair
These boots are the work of Chilean industrial design student Camila Labra, and made mostly of recycled plastic bags. The boots are built by fusing layers of plastic polyethylene bags together to create a thicker and more resistant material to work with. Their interior is covered with quilted piqué cotton fabric to make them more comfortable and prevent overheating. According to the designer, the boots are impermeable, flexible, light and non toxic.
The line of boots is named Dacca (aka Dhaka) after Bangladesh's capital, one of the most polluted with plastic bags in the world (the bags were banned in the city in 2002).
Made after special orders, the boots are sold for 22,000 Chilean Pesos (45 USD).

THE BAYLIENS ON "PAID DUES" WE MADE IT!!!!'
THANKS TO EVERYONE WHO MADE THIS HAPPEN..
MOLLY,JIM THE CLEANER, BRIK, TIM HOUSE THE PEPOPLE @ GU, AND THE MAN HIM SELF MURS
The “PAID DUES” INDEPENDENT HIP-HOP FESTIVAL–presented by MURS 3:16 in association with Guerilla Union (Rock The Bells, Cypress Hill Smoke Out)–will return Saturday, March 28 to the NOS Events Center in San Bernardino, CA for the fourth consecutive year. Named “Independent hip-hop’s premiere festival” by SOHH.COM, the festival supports this genre of music where advanced lyricism, stinging political commentary and quality DJ performances flourish in a seemingly parallel universe. The 2009 lineup will feature performances from ATMOSPHERE, TECH N9NE, LIVING LEGENDS, BROTHER ALI, B-REAL, GROUCH & ELIGH, CAGE, BLU & EXILE, EYEDEA & ABILITIES, LMNO, DJ VAL THE VANDAL, VERBS AND THE BAYLIENS; the event will be hosted by 2MEX.
“This year’s Paid Dues line-up is very special to me because we have acts like Tech N9ne and Atmosphere who I’ve been big fans of and also trying to book forever. The So-Cal return of E & A, who haven’t played the NOS since the legendary Wu Tang reunion at the 2004 Rock The Bells. Cage, B-Real and G & E who all have new records dropping this spring. And there’s nothing like being the first to see your favorite artist do their new material. On the other side of things, myself and the entire GU staff will be diligent to provide the same high quality live music experience Guerilla Union has become known for over the years. I just can’t believe this is our fourth year! I am so thankful to all our family, friends and supporters. And I look forward to making this March 28th another great and memorable moment in hip hop history,” states Murs.
DSTL1 Android Smartphone Is Battlestar Galactica's iPhone
This is the Android-based, 3-inch Sharp touchscreen, General Mobile DSTL1. And it is everything the T-Mobile isn't: A stunning design and features combination that may convince regular consumers to choose the Android platform over iPhone.
Seriously, while the T-Mobile G1 leaves me completely in a blah state of mind, DSTL1 actually makes me horny in a "I wish this thing vibrates really hard" kind of way.
Look at it. It's like the Battlestar Galactica designers took the iPhone design and passed it through their Colony-Design-a-thon, adding angled corners to it but keeping the same black glass, chrome accents, black plastic, circular home button, ear speaker grill, and volume controls. The result is a design which looks extremely familiar to the public, yet adds enough changes to appeal to people who want something cool looking, but different. And with better specs too:

America's Rocket for Future Space Missions
peep Mars in the back!!!
How did NASA select the Ares family of rockets as America's new space transportation system?
Since the 1980’s, NASA has evaluated thousands of studies relating to space transportation. It has been said we could “pave” the way to the moon with all the studies that have been conducted. These studies looked at thousands of combinations and variations of how to send humans beyond low Earth orbit, back to the moon and on to Mars.
NASA looked at a wide variety of launch concepts -- from the Evolved Expendable Launch Vehicle (Atlas V, Delta IV), Space Shuttle (including Shuttle C, Direct type approaches and other solid and liquid rocket booster propelled systems) combinations, foreign systems and clean sheet designs.
The Exploration Systems Architecture Study (ESAS) was chartered in the spring of 2005 to recommend a fundamental architecture for supporting International Space Station, Lunar and Mars transportation.
Using data from previous and ongoing studies (several hundred vehicles), and consisting of a team of knowledgeable experts from inside and outside NASA, this study compared many launch and staging options for safety, effectiveness, performance, flexibility, risk and affordability.
ESAS concluded that NASA should adopt and pursue a Shuttle-derived architecture as the next-generation launch system, using a smaller vehicle for crew missions and a dedicated, heavy-lift launcher for cargo missions. This approach was selected due to several significant advantages, particularly safety, reliability and cost.
NASA continued to refine its launch recommendations post-ESAS. Since early 2006 NASA has made the following major modifications to the initial designs.
Upgraded from the shuttle's four-segment reusable solid rocket booster design (RSRB) to a five-segment RSRB design -- forming a common basis for Ares I and V Eliminated the space shuttle main engine (SSME) in favor of a newly designed J-2X engine for the Ares I upper stage. The Ares V upgraded from a five-segment RSRB with expendable SSME Core to a derivative of the Ares I 1st stage with a six-engine RS-68 Core and the J-2X engine for the earth departure stage (EDS).
Developing the new J-2X engine for both the Ares I upper stage and the Ares V Earth departure stage solves several potential problems including starting the SSME at altitude and the major expense of using it for the first stage engine. For additional cost savings Ares will use the expendable RS-68 engine which is “off the shelf” technology that meets both Department of Defense and NASA needs.
These combined changes represent a projected savings of over $5 billion in life cycle costs below the initial ESAS recommendations.
The shuttle heritage design offers years of proven flight concepts with a very strong technical and safety foundation for next-generation vehicle. Since ESAS, NASA has continued to assess options -- over 1,700 to date. After a thorough analysis of all the exploration architecture requirements, other solutions were ultimately determined to be less safe, less reliable, and more costly than Ares I and Ares V.
Throughout the selection process for its launch vehicles, NASA has been thorough, transparent, subject to regular independent reviews, open to alternative ideas, and has made all of its decisions based on hard data.
its a solid foundation for America's future in space.
THE HEADLINE THAT MADE MY DAY
Close Guantanamo Bay [check]
End international bans on abortion [check]
Attack global warming [check]
For those who know my work, know that the SF Chronicle headline today: "OBAMA PLUNGES IN ON WARMING" hit me someplace deep. While I'll continue to believe that it's on US (sans periods, un-acronymed US) to hold President Obama (yee!) to follow through on all this change, it is, no less, a HUGE message to send to the world. Tackling some the biggest political issues, the biggest pitfalls of the Bush Admin, in a week's time of his seat is a big smack to the face of right-wing bull shit and a huge motivatation for those who want to see real change (including the rest of the world).
Much love Barack, keep up the good work.

The Most Powerful Man In The World 01.21.09
THE WORLD HAS CHANGED!!!
There is no doubt that due to the work of Martin Luther King and other civil rights activist, that Jan 20th 2009 would not have been possible. The swearing in of the nation’s first Black President, not a descendant of slaves, but Black nonetheless. Tuesday in my extreme joy, I sent out a tweet stating that when you go to sleep and close your eyes do so, knowing that the most powerful man in the world is a Black man. So which someone replies “Wrong, MLK was that first…” I paraphrase, but basically he stated Martin Luther King was the most powerful man in the world when he was alive. With all due respect to Dr. King, but he was far from the most powerful man in the world..

PARIS — Marc Jacobs and the Louis Vuitton men’s studio director Paul Helbers have some design competition this season. Kanye West, who was sitting front row at the Vuitton show, has designed a line of five LV sneakers. Only one design, above, was featured in the show — a monochromatic midtop with no frills, save for a quilted flap in the back, all the easier to tuck pants into. “The inspiration came from a jacket with a huge collar in the movie ‘Dune,’ ” West says. “Most sneakers focus on the tongue, so I wanted to do something different.” West knows whereof he speaks: he says he has no idea how many shoes he owns, but he does know that he routinely needs to send shipments off to storage. The LV-meets-Kanye kicks will be available at Louis Vuitton stores in June.
